01 / The starting point
Four cities,
one considered sequence.
This is the practical version of the Imperial Cities Route: a suggested allocation of eleven nights, with the longer Fès–Marrakech move clearly protected. It works best with an arrival near Rabat or Casablanca and a departure from Marrakech. Reverse it if your flights make the opposite direction more sensible.
The rhythm is deliberately generous. You have full days in each city, space for one excursion from Meknès, and enough Marrakech time to separate gardens, architecture and the medina. It is a framework to adapt, not a list of promised services or a bookable tour.
Choose what changes from city to city
Give the four cities different questions. You might follow civic space in Rabat, the scale of monumental planning in Meknès, working streets in Fès and the relationship between gardens and urban life in Marrakech. The city guides offer ways to develop those interests without repeating the same checklist at every stop.
Keep the sequence as an example, not a promise about connections. Confirm the current transport for your dates and place the longest move where the itinerary can absorb it. Decide which visit can be shortened if needed. A route through four cities becomes much richer when each stay has a clear purpose and a little room to change.

02 / Shape your journey
Eleven nights, placed with purpose.
Suggested day numbers assume arrival on day one and departure on day twelve. Move the plan around your actual flight times.
- Days 1–2 · nights 1–2

Rabat
Day one is for arrival, the route to your room and a short walk. On day two, combine the Udayas area with one other focus, such as the Hassan Tower area or a museum. Leave the evening unhurried rather than crossing the city for a final checklist stop.
Explore Rabat - Days 3–4 · nights 3–4

Meknès
Travel on day three and explore locally after check-in. Day four can stay entirely in Meknès or become a planned excursion to Volubilis and Moulay Idriss Zerhoun. Arrange road transport separately and confirm opening arrangements before leaving.
Explore Meknès - Days 5–7 · nights 5–7

Fès
Take day five as a transfer and orientation day. Use day six for a guided introduction if you want one. Day seven is the chance to return to a smaller area, visit a craft space by arrangement or simply walk with more confidence. Keep purchases and packing out of your departure morning.
Explore Fès - Days 8–12 · nights 8–11

Marrakech
Reserve day eight for the long transfer. Days nine to eleven give you three full days: one architecture-led, one garden-led and one flexible. Day twelve is for departure. If you need to fly from Casablanca instead, move a night to the appropriate gateway and check the airport connection.

03 / A closer look
The excursion is a choice, not a requirement.
Volubilis can add a different historical scale to this itinerary, but it should not erase your time in Meknès. Ask whether the excursion you are considering includes a guide, entry and enough time at each place, or just transport between them.
If you prefer workshops, museums or slower streets, keep the day in town. The strength of an eleven-night plan is that it can support a real interest. You do not need to fill every spare half-day to justify the journey.
04 / Make it work for you
Resolve these before reserving rooms.
The first and final gateway
An inexpensive return flight can add another long transfer. Compare it with an open-jaw option using total nights, airport access and departure times.
The long rail day
Read the actual Fès–Marrakech timetable and any required connections. Book a train that lets you arrive comfortably and keep the evening simple.
The room location
Ask each host where a taxi can stop and how luggage reaches the property. For mobility needs, ask about steps and lifts explicitly; “central” does not describe access.
