A better way to be a guest
Respectful Travel in Morocco
Travel with curiosity, clear expectations and room for other people’s lives. Respect is often expressed through small, ordinary decisions.
Explore the plan ↓- Begin with
- A greeting & attention
- When unsure
- Ask, then follow the answer
- Leave behind
- Fair payment, light impact
01 / The starting point
Be interested.
Leave people room.
Respectful travel is not a performance of knowing every custom. It is a willingness to notice the setting, ask when you are uncertain and adapt without making yourself the centre of the encounter. Morocco is diverse; behaviour that fits one place may need adjusting in another.
A greeting, a clear agreement about a service and a patient response to a changed rhythm can make everyday interactions easier. Treat people as individuals rather than examples of an imagined culture. You are visiting places where work, family life and worship continue around you.
Make time part of the exchange
Leave space for a visit to be shorter, quieter or different from what you expected. A working shop is also a workplace; someone may be occupied even when the door is open. Begin by asking whether the moment is convenient. If the answer is no, accepting it is a meaningful part of the visit.
When buying, compare the actual objects and ask about materials, finish and care. Let the maker or seller explain the item rather than asking them to confirm a story you brought with you. Continue through the craft and language guides for context, then return to the individual encounter. Specific curiosity usually opens a better conversation than a broad claim about tradition.

02 / Everyday choices
Make respect practical.
Use observation and conversation, and follow the rules of the place you are visiting.
- Notice its present use
Entering a place
Check whether an interior, courtyard or workshop is open to visitors. Follow guidance on dress, shoes, noise and photography. A beautiful threshold may belong to a home or a religious space rather than a public attraction.

Buying or accepting a service
Clarify the price, what is included and whether there is a fee for a demonstration, photograph or guide. Bargain only where appropriate and keep the conversation courteous. A person’s work and time should not become a contest over the smallest possible price.

Joining daily life
Ask hosts about meal times, Ramadan arrangements or local expectations instead of relying on a universal rule. Keep paths and doorways clear, speak at a suitable volume and allow people to decline interaction. A few carefully used Darija phrases can open a warmer conversation.

03 / A closer look
A purchase can support more than a souvenir.
Choosing locally run stays, appropriately paid guides and well-understood craft purchases can connect your visit to the people doing the work. Ask specific questions about provenance and services rather than accepting a vague “authentic” label.
Use water and energy thoughtfully, especially where resources are constrained. Follow waste and trail guidance, avoid disturbing wildlife and choose activities with credible care for animals and the environment. A small change in your plan can matter more than a grand claim about responsible travel.
04 / Make it work for you
Keep the encounter honest.
Avoid invented stories
Do not infer someone’s identity, beliefs or circumstances from clothing or appearance. Ask respectful questions when a conversation is welcome.
Keep private life private
Photograph people only with appropriate permission and consider the effect of sharing the image. A social post can reach far beyond the moment in which it was taken.
Learn without demanding access
Museums, public performances and arranged visits are useful ways to learn. Private rituals, homes and workplaces do not owe visitors an experience.
