Atlantic Coast & Historic Port Cities Route
Ramparts, fishing harbours, modern cities and long horizons. Choose a stretch of the Atlantic and follow the coast at a human pace.
Explore the plan ↓- Suggested pace
- 7–12 nights for one stretch
- Travel style
- Rail north; road further south
- Best approach
- Choose your coastal chapter
01 / The starting point
The coast is a journey,
not one long beach.
The Atlantic links very different places. Asilah offers compact medina lanes and sea walls; Rabat combines capital-city culture with an estuary; Casablanca brings a modern metropolitan scale. Further south, El Jadida, Safi and Essaouira add distinct port histories before the coast opens towards Agadir.
Do not assume that a route drawn beside the water follows a continuous, quick seafront road. Connections often turn inland. Choose a northern or central-southern chapter first, then add places only when transport and nights support them. The regional route below is a menu, not a demand to visit every port.

02 / Shape your journey
Choose the coastline that suits you.
A suggested rhythm to adapt around your arrival, interests and energy. Check transport and access before you book.
- A northern chapter · 3–4 nights

Asilah & Larache
Use Asilah as an easy walking base, with time for Larache and its estuary setting if transport works. Confirm the station-to-medina transfer and any return coach. A beach outing depends on conditions; sea views do not automatically mean safe swimming.
Explore Asilah & Larache - Urban Atlantic · 3–5 nights

Rabat & Casablanca
Rail makes this pair a useful city chapter. Give Rabat time for the kasbah and cultural visits. In Casablanca, choose your neighbourhoods and pre-check any Hassan II Mosque tour rather than assuming general access to religious buildings.
Explore Rabat & Casablanca - Historic ports · 5–7 nights

El Jadida, Safi & Essaouira
Pick two bases, using the middle city as a purposeful stop only if the transfer allows. El Jadida brings the fortified Portuguese city; Safi rewards a pottery focus; Essaouira benefits from at least two full days of medina, port and coast.
Explore El Jadida, Safi & Essaouira - A southern finish · 3 nights or more

Agadir & nearby coast
Use Agadir for a more open, modern coastal stay. Check the exact location of any accommodation marketed under Agadir: a stay in Taghazout creates different daily transfers. Keep an easy final night if your departure airport is elsewhere.

03 / A closer look
Plan for wind as well as sunshine.
An Atlantic day can be bright and breezy while inland cities feel hot. Pack a useful layer, keep outdoor meals flexible and check local sea conditions before swimming or booking a water activity.
Alternate exposed ramparts and beach walks with museums, markets or a long lunch. In a working harbour, keep clear of unloading and equipment; boats and people are not a set arranged for photographs. A respectful distance often produces a better understanding of the place.
04 / Make it work for you
Build a better coastal journey.
A rail-friendly start
Rabat and Casablanca make a practical pair; northern stations can also help. Check the actual station and onward transfer, especially for smaller medina towns.
A road-based continuation
Further south, compare coach connections with a driver or a rental car. Ask whether a proposed stop is a real visit or merely a short break during a long transfer.
Choose your beach expectation
Surf, long walks, fishing ports and swimming are different activities. Choose accommodation for the coast you want, then verify access, lifeguards and conditions locally.
