The north, at its own pace
Northern Morocco & the Rif Route
Begin at the strait, move through Tetouan and turn towards the Rif. Choose a compact northern loop or a slower journey to the Mediterranean.

- Road connections
01 / The starting point
Let the north
be a whole journey.
Tangier, Tetouan and Chefchaouen make a coherent northern cluster with distinct landscapes and urban character. Al Hoceima extends the trip towards a Mediterranean coast framed by the Rif. It is a meaningful extension, not an effortless extra afternoon.
Choose the short triangle if you want a week of cities, cafés and walking. Choose the longer line if the coast and road journey are part of the appeal. Mountain scenery makes the distance rewarding, but it also means you should plan from real connections and daylight rather than map distance alone.

02 / Shape your journey
From the strait into the mountains.
A suggested rhythm to adapt around your arrival, interests and energy. Check transport and access before you book.
- 2–3 nights

Tangier
Start with the kasbah, waterfront and one cultural visit. Leave space to learn the city before travelling onwards. If arriving by ferry, confirm the terminal and transfer; Tangier city port and Tanger Med are different arrival experiences.
Explore Tangier - 2 nights

Tetouan
Give the medina a full day instead of passing through for lunch. Add a museum or craft-focused visit according to opening times. A nearby coastal outing can be an alternative afternoon, not another compulsory stop.
Explore Tetouan - 2–3 nights

Chefchaouen
Expect slopes and steps. A small circuit, a long pause and a return at another time of day can be more satisfying than chasing every blue doorway. Arrange any walking excursion around current weather and your own ability.
Explore Chefchaouen - Optional extension · 3 nights

Al Hoceima
Continue only if you have time for the road and at least two full coastal days. Check the onward journey or flight before committing. Choose beaches and activities according to access, local conditions and available safety support.
Explore Al Hoceima

03 / A closer look
A mountain road is not a train corridor.
Tangier has rail connections, but the Tetouan–Chefchaouen–Al Hoceima portion relies on road transport. Look up direct coaches before assuming a simple connection; changing buses or using a private transfer alters both cost and the shape of the day.
If a route requires backtracking, compare it with a shorter loop. Do not book a tight international departure on the same day as a long cross-Rif transfer. An extra gateway night is often a better use of time than one more roadside photo stop.
04 / Make it work for you
Choose the north that fits.
City-led
Focus on Tangier, Tetouan and Chefchaouen. Give each a full day and keep excursions optional. This is the most straightforward version for a first week in the north.
Coast-led
Add Al Hoceima and reduce the number of small detours. Summer brings a different coastal rhythm and demand; book for the actual season and exact beach location.
Walking-led
Plan from trail conditions and a qualified local guide, not from a photograph of a waterfall. Rain, heat and access changes can alter what is sensible on the day.
