01 / The starting point

The desert begins
long before the dunes.

A southern journey is shaped by mountain roads, oasis settlements and the distance between places. Ouarzazate, the Drâa Valley, Tinghir and Merzouga are not a single straight line. Decide which landscape you most want to understand and give it the nights it needs.

Use Ouarzazate as the point where the route opens into choices. The Drâa leads towards Zagora and M’Hamid; the eastern route through the Dadès and Todgha areas leads towards Merzouga. You can connect both with more time, but doing so should be a considered circuit rather than a hurried detour.

Open dunes are one chapter of a much wider southern landscape.

02 / Shape your journey

Build the journey in chapters.

    Crossing & Ouarzazate

Allow for the road from Marrakech, stops and weather. Aït Ben Haddou deserves a visit with time to walk, not a rushed arrival at the hottest hour. Confirm accommodation locations: staying in Ouarzazate and staying beside the ksar create different daily journeys.

  2. Branch A · 2–3 nights
Earthen buildings beside the palm-filled Drâa Valley

    Drâa Valley & Zagora

Follow the oasis landscape south with enough time for settlements and a locally arranged visit. Zagora can be a base before a further journey towards M’Hamid. Confirm the location of any desert camp: the name of the nearest town does not tell you how far off-road it is.

  3. Branch B · 2–3 nights
Palm oasis and colourful valley settlement near Tinghir

    Tinghir & the eastern route

Use the valley and gorge area as a stay rather than a quick photograph between long drives. Walking access and safety depend on weather and local conditions. Continue east only after checking the length of the next stage.

  4. Eastern dune stay · 2 nights or more

    Merzouga

A village or edge-of-dunes stay can be as useful as a camp. Ask about transfer distance, vehicle type, water, toilets, heating or cooling and what happens in strong wind. Protect the following travel day; sunrise is not a reason to schedule an exhausting onward drive.

03 / A closer look

Ask what “desert experience” actually includes.

A camp photograph cannot tell you how it is reached, how far you will travel, or whether an activity is included. Ask for the exact meeting point, camp area, arrival time and return arrangement. Clarify whether you can choose a vehicle transfer instead of riding a camel.

Check animal care, guide arrangements and the suitability of activities for your group. Hot weather, cold nights and wind can change the experience. A responsible operator should explain alternatives clearly and let the landscape dictate the pace.

04 / Make it work for you

Protect the quality of the road days.

One branch or both?

Choose Drâa–Zagora or Tinghir–Merzouga for a shorter journey. With more nights, connect them through a planned circuit and ask an experienced local driver about the sensible order.

A driver or self-drive?

Compare the value of local road knowledge with your own confidence and the demands of the journey. Check insurance, daylight travel, fuel planning and current road access.

When to go?

Spring and autumn can be useful starting points for planning, but conditions still vary. Summer heat and winter nights need explicit consideration; check the actual forecast and accommodation facilities.
